Carrowmore began in
1995 with the purchase of a 18 acre wooded lot, situated at a high
plateau in Petersburgh, New York--a town at the foot hills of the
Taconic Mountains just across the borders of Vermont and Massachusetts.
Since that time a passive solar
stone home and greenhouse
were constructed, and a 1/4 acre of gardens
established in a very private setting deep in the woods.
In addition to the 14 acres, we have created a land trust on 4 acres
specifically for building affordable housing. This means that families
can build a home, without needing to purchase land. Using our extensive
inventory of tools, shared labor, indigenous material (stone, cord
word, straw bale), and alternative energies, housing can be built very
affordably. If needed, we can also discuss various homeownership
programs such as grants and low-interest loans.
Our vision for community emphasizes low environmental
impact, economic frugality and resource sharing to reduce the necessity
for wage earning, organic gardening, community-built housing,
egalitarian decision making and shared property interest.
The scale of the community would include three to
four households, of varying sizes and composition, housed in community
designed and built housing.
At a minimum, community members would be expected to be non-smokers,
preferably vegetarians, and have the ability to cover their expenses.
This is a
great opportunity to live a life style that will afford time for
personal/family growth and well being, while deriving the economic and
social benefits of living in community.
